Seasonal Summer College Internship in Community
at NEIGHBORHOOD HOUSING SERVICES of CHICAGO in Illinois
NEIGHBORHOOD HOUSING SERVICES of CHICAGO (NHS) creates opportunities for people to live in affordable homes, improve their lives and strengthen their neighborhoods. We do this by:
• Educating and preparing new homeowners for success
• Lending to help people buy, fix and keep their homes
• Sustaining home ownership through foreclosure prevention services
• Preserving, rehabbing and investing in housing
• Building powerful and enduring community partnerships
We are currently seeking a recent college graduate or grad student for a summer internship. The intern will work under the supervision of the Director of Home Ownership Services and will spend some time learning about NHS and it’s current foreclosure intake process. The intern will also work with NHS counselors, intake staff and neighborhood directors to implement new efficiencies and to ensure there is compliance. The intern will collaborate with the Innovation Department staff to design a research project on NHS’ foreclosure customers and processes, gather external home ownership data, analyze NHS counseling and lending data, and compare this information to local and industry standards. She/he will create a written report of this research.
The project is expected to last 8-10 weeks during which time the intern’s activities will include:
• Coordinating the new foreclosure intake process.
• Identifying all components of foreclosure customer processing.
• Monitoring the implementation of new methods.
• Ensuring that JPS’ (Just Priced Solutions) web-based client tracking database is being continuously updated.
• Managing new uplinks that will be incorporated into the process.
• Analyzing the causes of foreclosure as indicated by clients, the characteristics of clients who are mostly likely to overcome their foreclosure problem and re-stabilize, and the most effective strategies NHS uses to help these customers.
• Analyzing existing data NHS has on clients that come through the City of Chicago referral process to learn how NHS’ services are affecting the target population.
• Researching the outcome of properties that NHS is unable to prevent from foreclosing.
• The intern will be expected to conduct two (2) to four (4) internal training meetings and/or seminars with NHS counselors, intake staff and neighborhood directors on the implementation of new processes. Also, the intern will hold one (1) to two (2) external training meetings with community/social service partners so that other organizations can make effective referrals to NHS when they receive customers who are in need of foreclosure prevention assistance.
