Yahoo! News is looking for talented engineers who are passionate about online news and want to take the No. 1 news destination on the Internet to even greater heights. You’ll help shape unique, original, multimedia news packages. And you’ll help set the standard for how user-contributed content and social media are integrated into a complete news experience.

In this highly visible role, you will design and implement software in support of our strategic partnership with the Newspaper Consortium, with key projects in areas like Local News, News Search and Mobile applications. You will take the lead in keeping millions of people plugged into the news that matters most to them, in all of the communities where they and their loved ones live, work, and travel.

Challenges include:

• Conceiving, designing and implementing the next generation of online news
• Building high performance systems to ingest, process and distribute breaking news from thousands of sources, including hundreds of newspapers
• Lovingly crafting tools that enable editors to orchestrate multiple content sources
• Creating compelling, immersive experiences for news customers

Ideal candidates should have:

• Sponge-like ability to rapidly absorb and apply the most appropriate technology to difficult problems
• Proactive drive to excel at getting things done well, on time
• Superior analytical, debugging and problem solving skills
• Persuasive written and oral communication skills, in English (multi-lingual a plus)
• Passion for building top-quality consumer products & services
• Exceptional ability to collaborate effectively on cross-functional project
• Consummate ability to create an optimal experience for internal and external customers

Pertinent technical skills & experience:

• Mastery of the LAMP stack, common web protocols, RFCs and associated tools
• Fluency in SQL && (PHP | Perl | Python) && shell && regex
• Proficiency with HTTP, SOA, REST, XML, RSS, NewsML, HTML, DOM
• Ops-level admin skills in BSD/*nix environments
• Experience developing scalable, fault-tolerant web applications and services
