Spring Interactive/Website Intern
at Tribune in New York, NY
Purpose:
WPIX, a Tribune Broadcasting television station in New York City, will host an Intern in the WPIX Website / Interactive Department for Spring 2008. This internship will provide an opportunity to experience the rigors of running a television website. Specifically, the intern will learn how the website interrelates to all other departments at a television station, how it connects the station to the community, and how it fits into the future of broadcast television. In addition, this internship will provide an opportunity to develop very eclectic skill sets from technical to communication. This internship is designed to help identify where course of study contributes to hands-on experience. The intern will participate in the daily production of cw11.com, as well as propose, create, and complete a special project.
The learning objectives and responsibilities are as follows:
Technical Skills
• Develop knowledge of the Tribune website production tool, Oxygen
• Develop skills working with digital photography and graphics using programs such as Photoshop & Image Ready
• Develop html code knowledge
News Skills
• Beaware of breaking news and be able to use relative website tools to maximize presetation for WPIX
• Interact with Newsday news paper and learn how to place news stories on the WPIX website -- news, entertainment, sports, etc.
• Attend news meetings and assist web producer in developing interrelated content to accompany on-air news.
Communication
• Interact with ALL departments as per each department's individual website needs: HR - Station Info & Jobs pages, Community Affairs - Community Calendar, content modules for locally produced content, Programming - Viewing guides, special needs, Creative Services - Web related promotions, contests, etc.
• Organize station mail
• Daily emails with content partners such as Feedroom, regarding matters of policy, content creation, and workflow.
Requirements
Interested candidates should have working knowledge of HTML and Photoshop. Web production experience, web writing/content is a plus. Students must have completed their sophomore year and be in good academic standing. With proper documentation, the internship can be for credit, but is not necessary; a stipend will also be paid.
