Part-time Spring News Intern (Rotational)

at Tribune Company in New York, NY

Purpose:

WPIX, a Tribune Broadcasting television station in New York City, will host an Intern in the Newsroom for Srping 2008. This internship will provide an opportunity to learn the methods and systems of the broadcast news business. The internship will focus on five areas: newsgathering, news production, features production, news library management and Sports – news production. In addition, this internship is designed to marry course of study to hands-on-experience. The intern will have the opportunity to shadow professionals.

The Newsgathering learning objectives and responsibilities are as follows:

Interns will study in the inner workings of the assignment desk, reporting in the field, and pre-production. At the assignment desk, they will make beat calls (calls to police and other authorities to gather news). They will also interact with the assignment editor, gathering and processing research materials. Interns will witness the breaking news process, assisting the Assignment Editor with assigning crews and coordinating reporters and stories. Interns will have the opportunity to shadow reporters in the field, learning the interview and story development process as well as learn production in the field.

The News Production learning objectives and responsibilities are as follows:

Interns will have the opportunity to work with writers and producers, who gather information over AP wires, by making research calls and coordinating information from the field. Participate in the news production process by assisting producers, directors and writers. Union rules limit how active interns can participate in production, therefore, the interns will be able to assist producers and writers by pulling file tape, reviewing graphics, and printing/distributing rundowns and scripts. The interns will make research calls, calls to crews in the field, work on the assignment and planning boards as well as gather “MOS” bites in the field. The interns will have the opportunity to shadow the director, distributing rundowns and coordinating production tapes and graphics.

The Features Production learning objectives and responsibilities are as follows:

Participate in the production of feature segments, including the entertainment blocks, lifestyles segments, and live feature reporter segments – which includes making calls to PR/entertainment representatives. The interns may assist with coordinating live shots, pulling file tape and general duties of the line producer. In addition, the interns will be able to attend pitch meetings, and under the supervision of a segment producer, work on their own segments.

Requirements

Qualified students must be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university, undergraduate or graduate program, have completed their sophomore year and in good academic standing. The qualified intern must be enrolled in a parallel major in the field of Journalism, Broadcasting, Communications etc., as the internship is designed to provide hands-on experience as it relates to major course of study. The successful candidate will have completed courses in broadcasting, have a general understanding of a television station and have applicable internship and/or volunteer experience. With proper documentation, the internship can be for credit, but is not necessary; a stipend will also be paid. EOE
